Stock Market Summary for Monday, June 22, 2009
It’s a new week and the low trading cloud still hangs overhead. As such, the market saw only 9 stocks trading of which 3 advanced, 5 declined and 1 traded firm. Of the advancers, Grace Kennedy Ltd. (GK) was the main advancer with its price appreciating by $4.63, or 10.27% to close the day at $49.73. To follow suit, Supreme Ventures Ltd. (SVL) gained $0.08 or 4.00% to close trading at $2.08. The top third advancing spot was filled by the Scotia Group Jamaica Ltd. (SGJ), which advanced by 1.57% or a gain of $0.27 to close at $17.49. Of the decliners, the main loser was First Caribbean International Bank Jamaica (FCIBJ) which recorded a decline of 20.73% or $4.14 to close the day at $15.83, while The Gleaner Company Limited (GLNR) lost $0.11 in value or 7.28% to end the day at $1.40. Third place amongst the decliners went to Carreras Ltd (CAR) which recorded a decline of 4.33% or drop of $1.86 to close the day at $41.14
Trading volumes strengthened somewhat however, behind trades in Supreme Ventures, which traded 1,000,000 million units to account for 80.49% of the day’s total volume. The closest follower was Sagicor Life Jamaica Ltd. (SLJ) which had 99,477 units trading to capture 8.01% of volumes with the third spot going to the Scotia Group Jamaica which traded 58,445 units crossing the exchange to command 4.70% of market volumes.
The JSE Market index declined by 12.23 points or 0.01% to close the day at 81,740.48 points while the JSE Select index closed at 1,822.43 points, gaining marginally by 6.69 points or 0.37%. The JSE All Jamaican Composite also declined by 22.66 points to close at 67,456.27
